Discussion Series

Building connections starts with a shared experience. This summer, every new student will receive an electronic copy of Hope Jahren's "Lab Girl." The book details Jahren's childhood in rural Minnesota, her life as a woman in science and battles with mental health. With your copy of the book, you will also receive a letter sharing some prompts to complete while you read.

When you get to campus after reading the book, you will participate in a five-week discussion series, engaging in important topics with your peers. The book and discussions aim to explore themes of diversity, inclusion, belonging and wellness – and what it means to come together as a community to share those ideals. Your participation and completion of assignments in the shared reading discussions will also be a part of your intro course grade. Your course schedule will include this five-week discussion series - listed as SEM 100.
