Questions Frequently Asked by New Students

When is new student orientation?

Syracuse Welcome 2009, Syracuse University's new student orientation program officially begins on Thursday, August 27, 2009, through Sunday, August 30, 2009.

How do I get online?
Information Technology and Services (ITS) provides a wide range of computing services and facilities for students, including high-speed wired (ResNET) and wireless (AirOrange) Internet connections in the residence halls and across campus, e-mail, online academic and personal information resources through MySlice, and computer labs equipped with specialized academic software technologies. Access to these services is controlled through the NetID and password. Students who have not activated their NetID are encouraged to do so before they arrive on campus. The process is simple and can be done online at http://netid.syr.edu.  You will need your SUID Number to activate your NetID.

Your SUID number is a nine digit number located on your Intent To Register Form. If you did not record this number, you can request it from the Office at Admissions via e-mail at orange@syr.edu.

What are the local banks in Syracuse?

Four banks are located near the campus area: Alliance Bank, JPMorgan Chase, HSBC, and M&T Bank. Two additional banks, Key Bank and Bank of America, are located within a short driving distance from the University.

For your convenience, you may wish to establish a personal bank account with a local bank prior to your arrival on campus. Information concerning types of accounts available, minimum deposits, and required identification to open the accounts is available from each bank. Contact information for each bank is listed below. For additional information, call the Treasurer’s Office at 315-443-2474, or go to http://treasurer.syr.edu and choose “bank/ATM info” on the left navigation bar.

Please note: local banks will not cash your personal checks unless you have an account with them. Therefore, you will want to plan ahead and establish an account to have access to funds via an ATM machine, or bring traveller’s checks to campus to ensure ready access to money.

Syracuse University owns many ATMs on campus. The transaction service charge varies, with a maximum of $1.50. Contact your bank to determine if they charge any additional ATM service fees.
