When and how do students register for classes?

You will receive a mailing from your school/college with specific instructions for registering for classes in May. Some students register on-line, others by mail. After August 15, 2008, you can access a copy of your schedule through the MySlice portal. This portal can be accessed from any Internet-connected computer on or off campus at http://myslice.syr.edu/ or at the MySlice link from the Registrar's Office website, http://registrar.syr.edu/. Paper copies of your schedules will be distributed upon checking into your residence halls during Syracuse Welcome 2008. Commuter students can pick up their schedules during Syracuse Welcome 2008 at the Commuter Student Resource Center, located at 754 Ostrom Ave in the Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs.

Students unfamiliar with the online registration process can review the registration tutorials at cms.syr.edu/myslice/help. You must use your NetID and password to access the MySlice portal. If you have not used MySlice before, have not activated your account, or have forgotten a password, you can set up a new account or reset your password at the Information and Technology Services Web site, netid.syr.edu.

How do I select my classes?

Your Registration Information Packet, mailed to you in May, will include specific instructions for selecting your courses as well as a Course Selection Sheet that is specifically designed for each student. All Schools / Colleges will have an 800 number available to students to answer questions. After you have completed the form, using the return envelope provided, mail it to your school/college.

Are all students assigned an academic advisor?
How often should they meet?

Every student in the University's individual colleges is assigned a faculty advisor who assists in planning an academic program. Students meet with their advisors before registering each semester to review curriculum requirements and their progress to date. Many of our schools also have peer advisors or upper-level classmates selected to advise students. Students can change advisors in the office of the undergraduate dean in their home college.

Will I be required to take a Math or Language placement exam?

Different programs of study have differing requirements. Your Registration Information Packet, mailed to you in May, will contain a listing of requirements. Instructions for taking placement exams will be included in your Registration Information Packet.

Will it be possible to find out what textbooks are required for courses before the semester starts and does faculty post this on the web or portal?

Once the student registers for classes, you can choose to pre-order textbooks directly from the bookstore. The bookstore can automatically access the student's schedule and put together a box of appropriate texts. For more information visit the Bookstore's website http://www.syr.edu/bkst.

Should I bring my own computer?

Bringing your own personal computer is a personal choice. Many students find it convenient to own a personal computer. If you do not wish to purchase or bring your own computer, there are many computer labs located throughout campus and residence halls for your use. Be sure to check with your future roommate(s) to see if they are bringing a computer and also how you might be able to share as needed.

Each of Syracuse University's individual schools and colleges have their own specific computing needs and recommendations. It is best to connect with them before making this purchase. In addition, the University Bookstore offers University-recommended computers, computer software, and many accessories. Syracuse University students, faculty and staff can receive significant savings on educationally priced software. For more information on computing services, go to Information Technology & Services website at its.syr.edu.
