Placement Exams

All new SU students are expected to take all applicable placement examinations before registering for classes. Mathematics and foreign language placement exams are available online. You can take the online exams from any computer by going to MySlice and following the links to Student Services > Placement Exam > Take Placement Exams.  For more information visit the ITS Frequently Asked Questions about Placement Exams. 

English Language Assessment Exam

All undergraduate students for whom English is not their dominant language must take the English Language Assessment Exam (ELAE). Please register for the exam at this link. SU first-year undergraduate and transfer students will be assigned a time and location to take the exam by the Office of First-Year and Transfer Programs when you receive your orientation schedule. The ELAE will be offered Monday, August 19th from 8:30am-noon and 1:30pm-4:30 pm. Exam location TBA. Please bring a No. 2 pencil, eraser, and your SU I.D. If you have questions, please contact one of the ESOL Coordinators, Dr. Matthew Hammill or Dr. Youmie Kim.

Foreign Languages

All new students who have any previous instruction in or personal experience with a language and plan to continue studies in the language must take the appropriate foreign language placement exam. To be properly registered, you must take the appropriate placement exam online at before submitting your course request forms. Placement exams will be offered on Thursday, August 23 from 1 to 2:45 p.m. and Friday, August 24 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in H.B. Crouse Hall.


New students who wish to register for a mathematics class, either in the Fall or later, must take the placement exam available on MySlice.
