Office of Prevention Services

The Office of Prevention Services (OPS) advances academic success and personal development for SU students by building comprehensive initiatives to prevent high-risk drinking and other drug use, sexual violence, and related harm. The office operates a number of special programs to forward this goal, including:

Education and Prevention Resources

• Educational outreach, a multimedia health resource center, and trainings and workshops such as First-Year Seminars and Freshman Forums. Educational resources are available for students, staff and faculty on topics including but not limited to: alcohol poisoning prevention, illegal and prescription drug abuse, sexual decisions in the presence of alcohol and other drugs, empowered bystander interventions to prevent sexual violence, and responding appropriately to survivors of sexual assault.

• OPS coordinates the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) bystander reduction training project with student leaders in fraternities and sororities at SU.

• Peer education student groups include Peer Sphere, e5m (every five minutes), and Sex Esteem.

Twelve Point Plan - Syracuse University's Twelve-Point Plan for Substance Abuse Prevention and Health Enhancement utilizes a comprehensive, environmental management approach to reduce student substance abuse; increase campus safety; and promote a campus culture characterized by civility, good citizenship, and community engagement.

Assessment, Early Intervention, and Support Services

• OPTIONS is a free and confidential early intervention, education, and referral service available to all SU students who experience problems related to their use of alcohol or other drugs. OPTIONS uses a harm reduction approach to substance abuse prevention. Students may self-refer or be mandated to OPTIONS through the University Judicial process. Individual meeting appointments and regular psychoeducational groups are facilitated by certified professional staff.

• Sexual violence response services include crisis response, support and advocacy for students who have been sexually assaulted and all who are affected by sexual violence. Survivors are informed of the medical, legal, and judicial options available to them, supported and accompanied through whatever processes they select. Staff will assist survivors in accessing medical, counseling, academic, and residential support services as requested by the student. Staff will also provide judicial and legal advocacy as requested. Survivors can access services at any time by calling 315-443-7273.

• After-hours sexual assault response services are provided by Vera House Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Services. Vera House offers immediate advocacy and support for sexual assault survivors, as well as ongoing individual and group counseling and advocacy through its Crime Victims Resource Center. The center has a 24-hour hotline available seven days a week at 315-422-7273.
