Safety

The Department of Public Safety is dedicated to promoting and preserving the safety and security of the University community. In addition to regular patrols, responding to calls for help, and investigating crimes, DPS helps members of the SU community increase their own safety and security through a variety of educational programs and initiatives:

• The new Orange Watch program provides enhanced DPS presence in key areas on the north and south campuses and in neighborhoods north and east of campus. Orange Watch officers patrol throughout the calendar year, with a pronounced presence from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. and on weekends.

• The Blue Light System is a series of emergency alarm stations strategically located throughout the campus to provide assistance to anyone in distress. A blue beacon shines above each alarm station. When an individual presses the alarm button, they can communicate directly with the communications center at the Department of Public Safety to notify the officer of the emergency. An officer or emergency team will be dispatched to respond to the situation.

• The Adopt-A-Hall program is made up of SU students living in the residence halls and DPS officers. Weekly, DPS officers will visit students in the residence hall in an effort to foster positive relationships. The officers are there to listen to students and provide guidance for a variety of concerns. The Adopt-A-Hall program makes it easier for students to approach DPS officers, and DPS officers learn students' perspectives on situations and what DPS could do to improve service.

• Free walking escorts are available to and from any on-campus location, including residence halls, academic buildings, and parking lots and garages.

• Shuttle U Home is a shuttle service providing transportation from the Syracuse University campus to the University Hill homes of SU students, faculty, and staff. The service operates daily from 8:15 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.

• The Silent Witness program allows those who have witnessed or are witnessing a crime to report it anonymously to DPS.

Campus Crime Reporting

Your safety and security at Syracuse University are of the utmost importance to us. And when it comes to safety, knowledge is power. For information on lowering your victim profile and to access campus crime statistics, including campus crime information posted by the U.S. Department of Education, visit the Department of Public Safety's web site at http://publicsafety.syr.edu.

Crisis Alert System

Students, faculty and staff are included in a new crisis alert notification system being implemented as part of Syracuse University's ongoing efforts to improve safety and security on campus.

The new Orange Alert system - which will include text message, phone and email alerts - will be used to provide rapid notification and instructions to members of the University community only in the event of a critical incident in progress. For example, this could include an individual who is considered armed and dangerous, a widespread hazardous materials incident, an explosion or any other event in which there is an immediate threat of physical harm or death to campus community members.

To ensure that you will receive crisis alert notification messages, log onto MySlice, click on the "Orange Alert" link and follow these simple steps:

1. Verify/add your phone number(s).
2. Verify/add your email address.
3. Select the priority order in which you want to be contacted (for instance, #1 cell phone text message, #2 cell phone voice message, #3 email message, etc.).
4. Click "Save."

All information provided will remain confidential and will only be used for the purpose of critical incident notification and instruction and other critical University-related matters.

Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System

The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and risk avoidance, while progressing to basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. develops and enhances the option of self defense so it can become a viable consideration to a woman who is attacked. Visit publicsafety.syr.edu for class schedules.
