Time Management

In college you may feel like there is never enough time in a day to get everything done. You should take a close look at how you spend your time so you can take control, organize yourself and maximize your time. Time management is a learned skill that takes practice; the following tips should be utilized to help you develop skills that can enhance your overall college experience.

  • Make a to do list everyday. Put items of highest importance at the top and do them first.
  • Utilize a planner to organize appointments, tests, meetings and projects.
  • Map out assignments for the semester and do not procrastinate on starting projects.
  • Develop blocks of study time to avoid becoming restless. Blocks should be no more than an hour.
  • Use spare minutes to review notes or read part of a chapter.
  • Find the right time to study. You'll work more efficiently if you figure out when you do your best work.
  • Get a good night's sleep. When you are tired, the day seems longer and tasks seem more difficult.
  • Say no to extra commitments if you schedule is already booked. It is better to say no than to do a poor job because you did not have time.
  • Communicate your schedule to others so they know when they should not distract you.
  • Don't agonize and procrastinate over a project you are worried about, just do it and get it out of the way so you can move on.
